On self belief, and taking action
Olympic athletes are the best example of ultimate self belief. The Olympics are over for 2016 and the most memorable quote for me came from American gymnast Simone Biles.
"I'm not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I'm the first Simone Biles."
There have been some truly inspirational performances from these Olympic Games, as there always are, and for me they generally come from the “little people”.
I’m not talking about the glamorous, fully funded swim team or high profile, high sponsorship athletics stars but the little known athletes who have begged, borrowed, worked two jobs and trained without sponsorship to make their Olympic dream a reality. So many of these ‘overnight sensations’ have won medals and we’ve embraced them as our new heroes.
That’s why I love Simone Biles’s quote. Talk about self belief!
She hasn’t compared herself to anyone else, just appreciated her own (remarkable) worth and walked her talk. We can take some great inspiration from their lessons.
Believe in yourself first and foremost. We all know that person who has made good – not because they were the best but because they had a single minded belief that they could do something – that they WOULD do something.
Step away from the nay-sayers and negative talkers. They only bring you down. Find those people who will build you up and support you in your efforts to make positive change in your life. Association is absolutely critical in being successful with your goals, regardless of what they are. Invest and take time to build your self belief.
We all need to learn to accept ourselves, flaws and all – we are all uniquely us, so instead of comparing ourselves to others, we should work on learning to appreciate the amazing things that make each one of us special and different. Try and be the best version of you that is possible.
Accept that positive change can be uncomfortable. To see real change there has to be some challenge along the way. Look it in the eye, stand tall and yell ‘BRING IT’!
The Games are over for the next four years but there are still inspiring lessons in self belief that we can take forward with us.
Make it a great week!
